        By 2006, there were 135 newspapers and 6 newspaper (media) groups in Guangdong. The total newspaper circulation across the Province reached 3.24 billion copies. There were three newspapers with a daily circulation over 1 million, namely Guangzhou Daily, Southern Metropolitan Daily and Yangcheng Evening News. In Guangdong, newspapers generated 6.08 billion RMB yuan from advertisement, 1.59 billion yuan from circulation, and 1.22 billion yuan of tax and profits. There were 9 newspapers with an annual advertising revenue over 100 million, namely Guangzhou Daily (1.7 billion), Southern Metropolitan Daily (1.48 billion), Shenzhen SEZ Daily (520 million), Yangcheng Evening News (320 million), Shenzhen Business Daily (260 million), Jing Bao (190 million), Shenzhen Evening News (160 million), Nanfang Daily (130 million) and Twentieth Century Economic Report (110 million).

       As the only symphony orchestra invited to perform at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 15th Asian Games in Doha, capital of Qatar, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra performed twice in Doha, during the period from November 25 to December 2, and from December 15 to 19 respectively, and impressed the audience all over the world with a great success through TV broadcasting The stage play Businessmen in Thirteen Commercial Firms was awarded one of National Top 30 Best Projects in Stage Arts. The acrobatic show of the Journey to the West was awarded the First Prize among the pre-selected excellent repertoire at the National Song, Dance and Acrobatics Theme Evening, and the musical play entitled Stars also won the first prize in excellent repertoire at the Fourth National Opera, Dance Drama and Musical Performance.

        In March, 2006, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Preservation Center of Guangdong Province was officially instituted at the Guangdong Museum of Mass Arts. As agreed upon at the Joint Conference on Intangible Cultural Heritage and approved by the Provincial Government, the first list of 78 provincial-grade items of intangible cultural heritage was publicized in May. Among them, 29 items such as Meizhou Hakka Folk Songs were included in the first national list of items of intangible cultural heritage.
