Air Quality
In 2006, urban environmental air quality in Guangdong has been kept in good standing, with all cities up to the National Class II Standard while that in Heyuan and Yangjiang was up to the National Class I Standard. The average urban density of sulfur dioxide was 0.030 milligram per cubic meter, up by 11.1%, over the previous year, and up to the National Class II Standard, while that in Maoming saw the fastest climb, up by 47.2%, and that in Shenzhen and Zhaoqing followed right after. The average density of nitrogen dioxide across the province was 0.029 milligram per cubic meter, within the limit of the National Class I Standard. The average density of inhalable particulate matter (IPM) in Guangdong was 0.062 milligram per cubic meter, within the limit of the National Class II Standard. Pollution by acid rain remained seriously daunting. With 13 cities affected by acid rain, the average PH value was 4.80, and acid rain frequency was 52.7%. Guangzhou, Shaoguan, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Maoming, Zhaoqing, Meizhou, Qingyuan and Dongguan were among the worst affected by acid rain.

Water Quality
There are 73 sources of drinking water in Guangdong, an increase of 7 over the previous year. Overall water acceptability rate was 89.4%. According to statistics in comparable water sources, water acceptability rate was 88.8%, up 1.3% over the previous year. Except for Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the quality of the sources of drinking water in all other cities met the required standard.

Water quality in the major rivers generally remained stable with some improvements in some areas. Among the 111 sections monitored by the provincial institutions, 56.8% met the quality requirements of the corresponding functional zoning, 39.6% of which was excellent at Classes I or II, 20.7% good at Class III, 12.6% slightly polluted at Class IV, 14.4% moderately polluted at Class V, and 12.6% heavily polluted below Class V.
Among the 3 lakes monitored by the provincial institutions, the water quality in Huguangyan Lake was excellent at Class II. While that in Xihu Lake and Xinghu Lake is at Class IV, up to the quality requirements of the corresponding functional zoning. Among the 8 reservoirs monitored by the provincial institutions, Xinfengjiang and Fengshuba are both at Class I, Liuxihe is excellent at Class II, Yangliao, Gaozhou, Baipengzhu and Feilaixia reservoirs are all good at Class III, and Hedi Reservoir is slightly polluted by nitrogen at Class IV.
Among the 12 major ocean-bound rivers, 66.7% of the water quality at estuaries is good at Classes II or III, 16.7% slightly polluted at Class IV, and 16.7% heavily polluted at Class V. Water quality at estuaries of Shenzhen River and Lianhe River is poor, both below Class V.

The water quality of the off-shore areas are stable and up to the requirements of the corresponding functional zoning. Among the 67 such functional areas, 92.5% of the water quality met the required standards. The water quality in sea areas adjacent to the coast of Zhongshan was improved while that near Shenzhen drops slightly. The water quality of the off-shore areas of 11 coastal cities, except Dongguan and Shenzhen, met the quality requirements of the corresponding functional zoning.
