Once again it's the Lunar New Year. The English News Team at Radio Guangdong would like to extend the season's greetings to all of our listeners. We would like to wish everyone, health, happiness and success in the Year of the Rat. We sincerely appreciate your support over the years. To get you started off right in the Year of the Rat we would like to give you a few tips to help you join in the celebrations without causing an international incident. They are as follows:
5. When someone says to you "Xin Nian Kuai Le" they are not asking you for money. The word "kuai" tends to confuse some newcomers. They are simply saying "Happy New Year", to which you should reply the same to the best of your ability.

4 Do not stare when you see lots of adults holding a pinwheel with no children insight. It has nothing to do with the children's toy aspect of it and everything to do with a wish of fortune.

3. If you're married stay in! You certainly don't want to blow all the money you got in red envelopes before the holiday even ends. Things are a bit more expensive at this time, and why would you want to start the New Year penniless?

2. The envelopes on the mandarin oranges trees are not Secret Santa notes and are not to be used if you just happen to run out of envelopes. They contain small amounts of money and are there to bring fortune to the owner/establishment.
1. And last and most importantly; DO NOT PICK THE ORANGES OF THE TREES! This confuses lots of new foreigners as it seems logical that it's a holiday, a time of sharing, and they are everywhere. I mean you can eat the candy canes of Christmas trees right? True, but this is not Christmas time, it is the Lunar New Year and the trees (and their oranges) are there for decorative purposes and to bring good luck to the establishment/owner. Furthermore, the tree is not yours, why would you take something that doesn't belong to you.

Well we hope we've given you a bit of insight of what to do and not do during your holiday. Xin Nian Kuai Le!
