Olympic Flame Arrives in Beijing The plane carrying the Beijing Olympic flame was scheduled to arrive at Beijing Airport at 9:15 this morning. A grand welcoming ceremony will be held at Tian'anmen Square in the center of Beijing.

Beijing Receives Olympic Flame Yesterday (March 30), a handover ceremony for the Beijing 2008 Olympic flame was held at Athens' Panathenian staduim, witnessed by an audience of 20,000. The last torchbearer, Greek women's triple jump silver medalist of 2004 Olympics, Pigi Devetzi, ran into the stadium with the torch and lit the cauldron, which was surrounded by priestesses. The High Priestess ignited the torch and passed it to Hellenic Olympic Committee president Minos Kyriakou, who handed the flame over to Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Olympic organizing committee. Liu delivered a speech: "We firmly believe that the Olympic spirit is the essence of human civilization and the Olympic flame is the symbol of peace and friendship. The Beijing Olympic torch relay, themed 'Journey of Harmony', will be a sure success." He also extended a warm welcome to people from around the world to join the Beijing Games. "Welcome to Beijing." The torch will start its global trip today, passing 134 cities in 130 days with 21,880 torchbearers covering 137,000 km. It will also reach the world's highest peak, Mt Everest in May.
