Freak Rain Causes Deaths, Huge Evacuations
At least 18 people died and five were missing after rainstorms devastated part of southern Guangdong Province and triggered the biggest river flood in nearly half a century. The torrential rains that drenched Guangdong have caused direct economic losses of nearly 3.8 billion yuan, affecting 5.7 million people in 21 cities across Guangdong, including Shaoguan, Maoming and Heyuan. The Observatory predicted that storms will continue across Guangdong today and tomorrow, and the rain will weaken slightly after 18th.

Energy Efficient Lighting Promotion Underway
Yesterday (Jun 15) was the first day of the 2008 National Energy Saving Publicity Week. A campaign focused on energy saving publicity and promotion was held in Tianhe district of Guangzhou. Our journalist Lin Shuhua has more.
Promoting energy efficient lighting devices is a significant part of this year's publicity week as enterprises exhibit and sell their energy-saving lighting products to residents. Nowadays, more and more residents choose "Green lighting" devices. One resident said:
" Energy-saving lighting uses less electricity and the service life is longer than others."
A financial subsidy has been earmarked this year from the central budget to promote the use of energy efficient lighting. A sales person said:
"The national bid price is 7.8 yuan. Residents will be given 50% off when they buy energy saving lightings, so they only need to pay 3.9 yuan for each."
