Nation Stunned by Liu Xiang's Withdrawal
It was a heartbreaking moment for Liu Xiang and for numerous Olympics audiences. Liu Xiang, the defending Olympic champion of men's 110m hurdles and icon of Chinese sport, limped out of the Bird's Nest stadium after just managing a few awkward steps in his opening heat yesterday morning. He will not running at the track and field of Beijing Olympic Games, however, audiences' reaction was swift and supportive. Zhu Yuzi takes a closer look.
Zou Tingting, a volunteer in bird's nest said without any blaming,
"This is unbelievable when I heard that Liu has quit. We know he want to win very much. He was still there for the competition even though he was badly injured. His image became stronger and greater in my heart."
Injuries stopped Liu from the competition, but will never stop people's understanding and respect for the competitors who challenging themselves. An audience member Zhang said,
"He is still the No.1 in Chinese people's heart however he will not win the No.1 in the games, and will be our hero forever."
Not just Chinese, understanding and supporting crossed the country, an audience member from Cuba said,
"We felt so sorry that Liu quit from the Games. But he must have done so for a reason, and I believe he will be back."
Yes, we do believe he will be back. Come on, Liu Xiang!

President Hu to Visit Three Nations, Attend SCO Summit
Chinese President Hu Jintao will pay state visits to the Republic of Korea (ROK), Tajikistan and Turkmenistan from Aug. 25 to 30, according to the Foreign Ministry. Hu will also attend the eighth annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to be held on Aug. 28 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan's capital.
Macao, Sichuan Reach Consensus over 17 Reconstruction Projects
China's Macao Special Administration Region (SAR) government yesterday announced that it has reached a consensus with China's Sichuan provincial government over an initial bid for 17 reconstruction projects in the quake-hit province. These 17 projects include the rebuilding of Sichuan homes, infrastructure, education, health and social community facilities, which is valued at 1.2 billion Yuan (170 million U.S. dollars).
New Social Development Shows Results
In order to improve people's livelihood and develop a social security system in both urban and rural areas, 66 effective measures were introduced one year ago. After half a year's investigation and research, the 17 more measures covers 7 categories including social security, medical security, and medical assistance as well as housing security system to benefit more people. After it's implementation of the 17 measures, the total benefit for citizens will reach 15.5 million people.
