Massive Typhoon to Touch Down in Guangzhou
Provincial metrological authorities report that typhoon Nuri is expected to land on coastal areas around the mouth of the Pearl River.
Vice director of the Guangzhou municipal metrological bureau says typhoon Nuri is a strong, fast and powerful force.
"The typhoon is highly probable to land in the Yang Jiang area, but if it changes the line, it is also likely to hit the mouth of Zhu Jiang River and heavily affect Guangzhou."
Heavy rainstorms are expected in Guangzhou. Nansha, Panyu and Conghua districts should take effective measures against the strong winds. Emergency programs have been launched in these areas. Vice mayor of Guangzhou, Su Zequn said Guangzhou has to take full precautions against Nuri.
"According to our pre-arranged plan, as long as we take it serious and fully prepared, I believe we will minimise the effects of an impact of the typhoon."
Baiyun Airport Expansion
The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, to launch an expansion project constructing a third airstrip and a second terminal. With a total investment of 14 billion RMB, the project is expected to be completed before the 2010 Asian Games. Fifty new international airlines will be put to service in 2010. By 2020, the airport should meet the demands of 75 million passengers.

According to a conference, 221 manufacturers in second-grade water-source protection zones will be forced to gradually move out or shut down. Ten comprehensive treatment measures for the Pearl River have been established to preserve water quality. In addition, four sewage disposal systems located in Dashadi, Guilong, Zhuliao and Jiufu will be constructed and tested by October.
Guangdong Museum of Art Closes 17 Days for Triennial
The Guangdong Museum of Art closed today to prepare for the Triennial exhibition. This is the third time for the museum to hold the triennial. The event will display the latest works from 181 artists from over 40 countries and regions beginning September 6th and ending on November 16th.
Chinese Shares Down 3.63%
Chinese shares down more than 3 percent today. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index is down 3.63 percent, or 91 points, to 2431 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 8243 points, down 288 points, or 3.38 percent.
