Chinese Index Dives below 2200
Affected by the dramatic drops on the global market, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dived 5.23% to 2173 points today (October 6), on the first trading day after the week long National Day Holiday. The Shenzhen Component Index also plummeted by 4.52%. However, boosted by the launching of margin trading business for securities firms, shares of securities firms have seen strong increases.
Customized Number Plates Hits on Road
Starting today (October 6), car owners can design and choose their number plates for their new cars, instead of selecting the number through a random computer lottery. Although customized number plates are widely welcomed by car owners, crowds have not yet been seen in the registration offices. Our journalist Zhang Keng has more details.
At the registration office in Fangcun, Mr. Zhong easily obtained his favorite number U168N. He explained:
[record] UN is the abbreviation for United Nation. I just want to be unique, nothing special.
Over 1000 Guangzhou citizens have booked to register their number plates today, less than the maximum handling capability of 1355. Section head of the registration office Zheng Yongxing said that popular numbers like 1 or 7 have been chosen. He advised drivers to think of something different.

Hi-tech Fair to be Held in Shenzhen
The 10th China Hi-tech Fair, to be held between Oct. 12 and Oct. 17 in Shenzhen, has started setting up its booths today (October 6). The Fair will display high-tech products, organize seminars and personnel exchange fairs. The Guangdong delegation will mainly showcase self-innovation projects in fields of electronics, bio-pharmaceuticals, new materials and new energies.
