Traditional Chongyang Festival Celebrated Today
Today (October 7th) is the traditional Chongyang Festival, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, Chinese people traditionally climb mountains and measures have been taken to ensure the safety of hikers throughout the Province. One of the measures to ensure good care of the elderly was the installation of safety alarm bells in Guangzhou's Yuexiu district in 2005. If help is needed, they can press the bell for medical assistance. One of the users, an 80 year old grandmother had this to say about the service. "I use it very often if I have any needs."
However, the practice is not widely applied among elderly communities; only 2,400 households have installed the system. Yuexiu district, the initiator of this practice is exploring further utilization of the alarm bell system.
Ye Xinping, Deputy head with the district's civil affairs bureau, "From next year, we will use this system to develop a one-stop service allowing the elderly to enjoy more convenient access to public amenities. "

Guangzhou communication commission announced today (Oct 7th) that all the long-distance coaches shall be equipped with surveillance cameras to insure passenger safety and monitor the good behavior of drivers. The surveillance network has covered all buses operating in Guangzhou.
