44,000 Guangzhou Households Eligible for Low-rent Houses A government survey showed that over 44,000 families in Guangzhou are qualified to apply for low-rent housing. Guangzhou Land Resources and Housing Management Bureau (October 9) announced yesterday the name-list and urge these families to fill out application forms. Guangzhou is now building low-rent houses, with monthly rents of merely 1 Yuan per square meter in order to help the under privileged groups.
China tests find no melamine in new liquid milk China's top quality control agency said yesterday (October 9) that the latest tests on Chinese liquid dairy products found no traces of melamine. It was the eighth investigation on industrial chemicals following the tainted baby formula scandal that killed at least three infants and sickened more than 50,000 others. The latest tests covered 855 batches of liquid milk, including yogurt, from 77 brands in 22 major and 4 mid-size cities.
French writer wins 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature The Swedish Academy announced Thursday that French writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature. Le Clezio, 48, received much attention with his first novel "The Interrogation" in 1963 and made his breakthrough as a novelist with "Desert" in 1980, for which he was rewarded a prize from the French Academy.
