High-speed Railway Starts Construction
The construction of a high-speed railway line connecting Guangzhou to Guiyang, the capital city of western China's Guizhou province, was put underway today (October 13). The railroad, designed to enable trains to travel at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour, will shorten the travel time from the current 20 hours to around 6 hours.
Enthusiasts Running for Asian Games Volunteers
As the Asian Games approach, an English competition was kicked off yesterday (October 12) to select skilled volunteers for the Games. More from our journalist Yu Sulin:
Hundreds of contestants were running for 16 opportunities to enter the semi-finals. Tong Jingying, a Guangzhou student now studying in a Beijing university, was proud to have been a Beijing Olympic Games Volunteer and is now contesting for the Asian Games:
"The best outcome would be to be selected as a Volunteer for the Asian Games. But even if I fail, I have made new friends thanks to this contest, and that's what I'll remember most. "
The competition has also attracted expats living in the city. Alberto, an American who has been working in Guangzhou for 3 years shared his ambitions,
"Hopefully I can help other Chinese volunteers, perhaps, to practice their oral English to prepare them better, because we are going to have a lot of international spectators, 14,000 athletes, coaches and journalists. People from all over Asia are coming. "
